A video has emerged showing heavy security at the Supreme Court. This occurred as #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo demonstrators arrived to submit their petition.
In the viral video shared by UTV Ghana, the Supreme Court gate was locked. Demonstrators were left outside, unable to enter. Policemen in protective uniforms were present to prevent them from forcing entry.
Today, Monday, May 5, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties are demonstrating. They are protesting against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and President John Dramani Mahama.
The NPP is marching through Accra with several parties. These include the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP).
The NPP claims that the National Democratic Congress's attempt to remove the Chief Justice is dangerous interference in the judiciary. This demonstration follows President Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo after a prima facie case was determined against her.
The President established a committee under Article 146(6) of the Constitution. This committee will inquire into petitions referred to them by the Council of State.
