A video has emerged showing Makola market women praising the Mayor of Accra. They applauded him for a major decongestion exercise on Tuesday morning.
In the viral video shared on X, one market woman expressed gratitude to the Mayor and his team. However, some traders in Tudu are unhappy with the situation. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) confiscated their goods for selling unlawfully on pavements.
These traders argue that street vending is their only source of income. They say it supports their families, making the removals unfair. They also noted that the previous government treated them better than this administration.
The AMA began its decongestion exercise on May 20, 2025. Task forces from AMA, along with the Ghana Police Service, dismantled makeshift stalls and removed vendors from key areas in the Central Business District.
The first phase focuses on areas like Kinbu Road and Opera Square. The operation will last for two weeks to enforce city bylaws and ease congestion. This aims to ensure safe movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.
