Burkinabe nationals in Ghana have burned the flags of the USA and France. They protested against an alleged attempt to oust their leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
The protesters view the USA and France as imperialist forces. They believe these countries want to impose their will on Burkina Faso. The group gathered at the Burkina Faso embassy in Asylum Down, Ghana. They showed solidarity with fellow Burkinabes protesting back home.
One protester called for unity among their people and ancestral spirits. He stated that they would burn the flags of France and the US. Others chanted in support of his message.
Thousands rallied in Ouagadougou on Wednesday. This was after military authorities claimed to uncover a plot to overthrow the government. Demonstrators carried large posters of Captain Ibrahim Traoré and Burkinabe and Russian flags.
They held placards with slogans like “Down with imperialism” and “Full support for President Traoré.” This protest is one of the largest pro-junta demonstrations since Traoré's coup in September 2022. Burkina Faso has faced jihadist attacks for a decade, resulting in many deaths.
On April 21, the junta announced it had thwarted a major plot from Ivory Coast. Several top army officials were arrested during this operation. Traoré has accused Ivory Coast of harboring his opponents, which they deny.
Alassane Ouattara has been President of Ivory Coast since December 2010. He is often seen as a supporter of France. Over the past year, the junta has detained many military officers for plotting against them or destabilizing institutions.
In summary, Burkinabe nationals protested against perceived foreign interference while showing support for their leader amidst ongoing political tensions.
