[Video] Linda Ocloo leads demolition of structures on waterways

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has started a demolition exercise. This targets unauthorized structures built in waterways. The initiative follows recent devastating floods in parts of Accra.

The operation began on Tuesday, May 27. It focuses on illegal buildings at Ramsar sites. These include areas in Tema, Klagon, and the Sakumo Ramsar site. Wetlands are vital for natural drainage and flood control.

However, developers have increasingly encroached upon these areas over the years. Regional authorities say this exercise aims to restore natural watercourses. It also seeks to reduce ongoing flooding that affects communities in Greater Accra.

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo spoke to Citi News about the demolitions. She noted that property owners were warned beforehand but did not comply. “They are aware,” she said, adding that some buildings had "Stop Work" notices.

Ocloo emphasized that the demolition is necessary for safety and environmental protection. Recent floods have submerged homes and displaced residents, causing economic disruptions. This has increased public pressure on authorities to act against wetland encroachment.

Environmental experts warn that construction in these areas harms the city's drainage system. This leads to more severe flooding after heavy rains. Authorities plan to continue the exercise in other flood-prone areas.

They urge residents and developers to cooperate with this directive. Meanwhile, the Regional Coordinating Council is collaborating with environmental agencies and city planners. They aim to implement long-term solutions for future flood protection in Accra.
