Video: Minority MPs sit on the floor in protest of Wontumi's detention

New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs are protesting at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). They demand the immediate release of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

The protest began with a march from Parliament to EOCO's office in Accra. It escalated when Minority MPs, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, sat on the floor. They protested against what they called “unreasonable” bail conditions for their colleague.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week and interrogated by EOCO. He was granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified. Party members claim these conditions are excessive and politically motivated.

“We will not just walk away,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated firmly. He emphasized that what is happening to Wontumi could happen to anyone.

The MPs and supporters vowed to stay until EOCO changes the bail terms and releases Wontumi. Reports indicate rising tension as supporters blocked nearby roads with car tyres.

A police riot control vehicle tried to access EOCO but was obstructed by a pick-up truck. This led to a standoff between party supporters and security officers. Despite police efforts to restore order, protesters refused to disperse, chanting loudly.
