Virginia Palmer: Ghana is a model of democracy and tolerance

Outgoing United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, praised Ghana's democracy. She highlighted its role in regional security and social cohesion. In an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle, she called Ghana a “beacon of democracy” in West Africa.

Ambassador Palmer attributed Ghana’s stability to key national values and policies. She noted that democracy allows people to influence change. Additionally, the government is committed to inclusive economic growth and social cohesion.

She commended the government's efforts to provide equitable access to services. This is especially important for northern regions and border communities. “The government is ensuring social services reach the North,” she said.

On regional security, she emphasized Ghana’s contributions to peacekeeping. “You cooperate with your neighbors and share intelligence,” she stated. This cooperation helps defeat common threats and supports UN peacekeeping efforts.

Ambassador Palmer also stressed the importance of religious and ethnic harmony. She admires Ghana's tolerance in these areas as vital for peace. As her tenure ends, her reflections highlight Ghana’s reputation for democracy and stability in Africa.
