Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson has raised concerns about HIV/AIDS rates in Ghana. He noted that despite efforts, the situation remains serious.
Minister Nelson spoke during a meeting with Dr. Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, Acting Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), in Sekondi. He urged the Commission to intensify its campaign against the virus.
He observed that stakeholders seem complacent, which is hindering progress. “We need to keep our focus,” he emphasized. The statistics from the Western Region are alarming and unhealthy.
“All stakeholders must work together to make meaningful progress,” he added. Minister Nelson praised Dr. Akanbong for his proactive approach and said, “Your presence here will do a lot.”
He called on health workers and key stakeholders to maximize their efforts. Collaboration is crucial for improving tactics in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
“I will support you,” he assured them. He believes that collaboration will show results by next year and change the narrative moving forward.
“I will do everything I can to help MMDCs understand our goals,” he stated. Minister Nelson pledged his full support for the commission’s efforts.
Dr. Akanbong expressed gratitude for the warm reception from Minister Nelson. He updated him on current HIV/AIDS prevalence rates, emphasizing their importance to stakeholders.
The GAC's mandate includes coordinating responses, sourcing funds, and providing accurate data. While significant strides have been made, he warned against complacency.
Dr. Akanbong requested Minister Nelson's help in securing support for focal persons fighting HIV/AIDS spread. He highlighted funding shortages as a major challenge for these individuals.
Currently, Ghana's national prevalence rate stands at 1.53%. In contrast, the Western Region's rate is higher at 1.82%. Dr. Akanbong attributed this increase partly to illegal mining activities (Gallamsey).
