Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson has raised concerns about HIV/AIDS rates in Ghana. He noted that despite efforts, the situation remains serious.
Nelson spoke during a meeting with Dr. Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, Acting Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), in Sekondi. He urged the Commission to intensify its campaign against the virus.
He observed that stakeholders seem complacent, which is hindering progress. “We need to keep our focus,” he emphasized. The statistics from the Western Region are alarming and unhealthy.
“All stakeholders must work together to make meaningful progress,” he added. Minister Nelson praised Dr. Akanbong for his proactive approach and said, “Your presence here will do a lot.”
He called on health workers and key stakeholders to maximize their efforts. Collaboration is crucial for improving tactics in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
“I will support you,” he assured them. He believes that results from collaboration will be evident by next year.
Minister Nelson committed to helping local leaders understand their roles in this effort. “You have my full support,” he stated, promising backing from all MMDCEs for progress.
Dr. Akanbong expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the Minister. He updated Nelson on current HIV/AIDS prevalence rates, emphasizing stakeholder engagement.
The GAC's mandate includes coordinating responses, securing funds, and providing accurate data. While significant strides have been made, he warned against complacency.
Akanbong requested Minister Nelson’s help in securing support for focal persons fighting the disease. He highlighted funding shortages as a major challenge for these individuals.
Currently, Ghana's national HIV prevalence rate is 1.53%. In contrast, the Western Region's rate stands at 1.82%. Akanbong attributed this high rate partly to illegal mining activities (Gallamsey).
