W/R Minister worried overhigh prevalent rate of HIV/AIDS

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson is worried about the high HIV/AIDS rate in Ghana. He spoke recently in Sekondi with Dr. Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, Acting Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC).

Minister Nelson said, “It is a matter of great concern.” He urged the GAC to intensify efforts against the pandemic. Despite progress, he noted that complacency is affecting the AIDS campaign.

He highlighted alarming statistics from the Western Region. “All stakeholders must work together to make meaningful progress,” he stated.

Nelson praised Dr. Akanbong for his proactive approach and support. He called on health workers and stakeholders to give their best efforts. He emphasized improving operational tactics in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“Collaboration is crucial,” he added, offering his support to the commission. He believes that results will show by next year if they work together effectively.

Dr. Akanbong expressed gratitude for the warm reception from Minister Nelson. He updated him on current HIV/AIDS rates, emphasizing stakeholder involvement is vital.

The GAC's role includes coordinating responses, securing funds, and providing accurate data. While there have been significant strides, he warned against losing focus on the issue.

Akanbong requested Minister Nelson’s help in securing support for focal persons fighting HIV/AIDS. He mentioned funding shortages as a major challenge for these individuals.

Currently, Ghana's national prevalence rate stands at 1.53%. In contrast, the Western Region has a higher rate of 1.82%. The Director General linked this increase to illegal mining activities (Gallamsey).
