W/R: Ms Christiana Yankey wins maiden edition of Taadi FM's Mother Tongue Essay Competition

The first Taadi FM Mother Tongue Essay Competition has concluded.

Ms. Christiana Yankey, a 13-year-old JHS 2 student, won the competition. She attends Bethel Methodist Basic School in Takoradi.

The competition started on February 21, 2025. Its goal was to promote local languages among students in the Western Region.

Ms. Ayesha Cece from Bethel Methodist Basic School was the first runner-up. Elorm Idda from Amazing Child Preparatory School took third place.

The awards ceremony featured notable guests. These included representatives of the MP for Takoradi and Dr. Daniel Payin, Deputy Western Regional Director of Education. Also present were Mad. Charity Baah and Mr. Elwood Akuoko Mantey, General Manager of Taadi FM.

Dr. Payin delivered the keynote address at the ceremony. He highlighted the importance of mother tongue in education.

He explained that mother tongue supports cognitive and linguistic development. It helps preserve indigenous languages and boosts early learning confidence.

Dr. Payin urged parents and teachers to encourage mother tongue use among children. He said teaching in one’s first language enhances comprehension and confidence.

Mr. Elwood Akuoko Mantey expressed gratitude to various supporters of the competition. This included the Western Regional Minister and educational organizations.

Ms. Christiana Yankey received several exciting prizes for her achievement. These included a GHC 1000 cash prize, a tablet from Hommie Mobile, books, stationery, and more prizes.
