Kwesi Pratt Jr., the Managing Editor of Insight Newspaper, challenged Professor Kingsley Nyarko. He asked Nyarko to prove how President John Mahama plans to run for a third term.
Justin Frimpong Kodua from the NPP claimed there is a plot against Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. He linked this to an alleged scheme by the NDC. This scheme supposedly aims to allow Mahama to contest for a third presidential term. The argument involves Article 66(2) of the Constitution.
Kodua noted that some people want to interpret Article 66(2) differently. They believe it only applies to two consecutive terms.
On Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana, Kwesi Pratt responded. He mentioned a clip featuring party leaders discussing their concerns. They worry that if the constitutional process continues, Mahama might declare his intention for a third term.
Pratt said, “Your chief spokesman stated clearly that the NPP is not worried about the law.” He emphasized that their leaders believe this issue is political, not legal. He questioned why they are in court if they agree it’s not about the Constitution.
He further asked who suggested Mahama intends to run again. Pratt demanded evidence for such claims and criticized those calling for demonstrations based on assumptions.
Dr. Kingsley Nyarko also shared his thoughts on this matter. He expressed concern about Mahama potentially running again due to Article 62(2). Nyarko believes the Supreme Court may need to interpret this article in the future.
He argued that discussions around this constitutional provision should not be dismissed as dreaming. The demonstration he mentioned relates to removing the Chief Justice and issues within the judiciary.
Meanwhile, investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni weighed in on these allegations against Mahama. He stated that Mahama is too decent to consider a third term. In a post on social media, he wrote, “I think John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third term.”
