The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has banned fees for washroom use. This directive applies to all healthcare facilities in the country.
The announcement was made on April 16, 2025. It follows complaints about charges for using hospital toilets. The GHS calls this practice unacceptable and exploitative.
In a press release, Acting Director-General Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea expressed concern over this trend. He stated that washrooms are essential for patient and visitor comfort.
He emphasized that washrooms should not be used for exploitation. They must remain clean and accessible at all times. Clean facilities help prevent infections and improve patient satisfaction.
Regional Directors must ensure this practice ends immediately. Prof. Akoriyea warned that facility heads who do not comply will face sanctions.
Health facility leaders are expected to follow this directive closely. The GHS aims to restore dignity and comfort for patients and caregivers alike.
