UTV broadcast journalist Abena Kyei Boakye has called for the arrest of street vendors in Kasoa. These vendors built shelters over a traffic light to conduct business. She believes this poses a serious threat to public safety.
Speaking on UTV, she expressed frustration about the situation. She said, “The government should direct them that what they are doing is wrong.” She emphasized that ignoring simple rules prevents progress and makes no sense.
Abena Kyei Boakye insisted that the vendor must be arrested. She wants an explanation for why they covered the traffic light, which is illegal. Her comments followed a viral video showing traders building a shed over the traffic light.
The video sparked outrage online. A netizen remarked, “This can only happen in Kasoa; they have covered the traffic light.” The video emerged during Accra's decongestion exercise that began on May 20, 2025.
During this exercise, AMA task forces and police dismantled unauthorized stalls and removed vendors from key areas in the Central Business District. Some Ghanaians reacted strongly to the video.
One person noted how strict police are with passengers but not with vendors. Another commented on the presence of a nearby police station yet no action taken against the vendors.
A different user criticized the blatant disregard for public property shown by these traders. They questioned how anyone could build so close to a road or traffic light without fear of consequences.
Another netizen pointed out that police often only act when it involves trotro drivers picking up passengers at that spot. One more Ghanaian remarked on seeing many police officers there but claimed they were extorting money from drivers instead of enforcing laws.
Abena Kyei Boakye’s call for action highlights ongoing issues with street vending and public safety in Kasoa.
