A video has emerged of Alfred Ababbio Kumi, known as Adenta Kumi. He is a youth activist for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The video shows him celebrating with NPP members after his release from National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) custody.
Reports indicate that his release followed discussions between security officials and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. In the viral video, Kumi is seen with Afenyo-Markin, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, and other party members singing a party song.
Kumi was arrested by NIB for allegedly publishing fake news. He had petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. His legal counsel, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, stated he faced charges related to an interview and social media posts.
Gyamfi explained that Kumi was cautioned before being charged. He mentioned they are nearing the end of the process and have applied for bail.
Kumi's petition claimed that committee members undermine the integrity of the inquiry into the Chief Justice's suspension. He alleged a meeting took place on May 15 at Santoku Restaurant involving Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu along with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for one of the petitioners.
Kumi asserted that this meeting damaged public confidence in the inquiry process. He noted that Justice Pwamang has shown interest in becoming Chief Justice after Mahama’s election. Similarly, he claimed Justice Adibu-Asiedu lobbied for the position after Justice Anin Yeboah's exit.
Kumi described the entire process as potentially fraudulent and urged President Mahama to protect its credibility. In response, Thaddeus Sory denied any such meeting occurred in a Facebook post. He called Kumi's claims a "monstrous lie" and emphasized it could be easily fact-checked.
