A video has emerged showing officers from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) allegedly raiding Alfred Ababio Kumi's home. Kumi is also known as "Adenta Kumi." This incident occurred early Friday morning.
Kumi recently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama. He requested the dissolution of a committee investigating the Chief Justice’s removal. Reports indicate that about eight operatives were involved in the operation.
Nana Ama Owusu, Kumi's mother, confirmed his arrest to the media. She said, “We saw about eight armed operatives arrive holding guns.” They broke down his door while he was taking a bath.
She added, “They brought a paper but I didn’t look at it. They said they only wanted to speak with him but ended up taking him away.” The officers arrived at 5:30 am and took him around 6:00 am.
Member of Parliament Ekow Assafuah commented on the situation. He stated that Kumi was picked up by eight armed men believed to be NIB officers. Six of them were wearing masks.
Assafuah expressed concerns over government actions affecting free speech and good governance. Kumi had previously petitioned President Mahama regarding the committee probing suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Kumi claimed that committee members undermine the integrity of the inquiry process. He alleged that Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu met with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for one of the petitioners, on May 15 at Santoku Restaurant.
Kumi stated that this meeting damaged public confidence in the investigation process. He noted that Justice Pwamang is interested in becoming Chief Justice after Mahama's election.
Kumi called for action to protect the credibility of this constitutional process. In response, Thaddeus Sory denied any such meeting took place and labeled it a "monstrous lie."
Sory emphasized that it is easy to fact-check his claims on social media. Meanwhile, a video surfaced showing Sory dining with another justice at a restaurant without discussing any petitions.
The video indicates that Justice Pwamang was not present during this alleged meeting as claimed by Kumi.
