Government Starts Borehole Project for Volta SHS Facing Water Crisis
The government has launched a borehole project at Tanyigbe Senior High School. This initiative is part of the Water For All Initiative. Additional projects are also planned for Taviefe Health Centre and Mawuko Girls School in Ho.
Residents, parents, and education stakeholders have welcomed this new water project. Many expressed their relief to YEN.com.gh about the ongoing water challenges in the area.
Tanyigbe SHS has struggled with a lack of potable water. Students often walk long distances to fetch water, missing classes and facing health issues.
Addressing Long-Term Water Challenges
In February 2025, Volta Regional Minister James Gunu visited Kpeve Water Headworks. He assessed damage to pump systems that caused extensive water shortages in the region. The visit aimed to evaluate problems and plan sustainable repairs.
The Water For All Initiative focuses on resilient infrastructure and sustainable development in Volta Region. By drilling boreholes at schools like Tanyigbe SHS, the government aims to improve academic performance and public health.
Gunu emphasized that clean water is essential for communities and schools across the region.
Community Support for the Initiative
Residents and school stakeholders are praising this government initiative. They see it as a long-overdue solution to their water needs.
A student from Tanyigbe SHS expressed happiness about finally getting water access. A teacher noted that improved hygiene would enhance class attendance.
Parents also shared their frustrations over past years without adequate water supply. They feel this intervention shows that their concerns are being heard.
However, some residents voiced additional concerns. Azumah Gameli highlighted that Volo Community Senior High School also needs urgent attention due to severe water shortages.
Mañuël Kĩng thanked Minister Gunu but urged him not to forget Adaklu Senior High School, where students face daily challenges fetching water from distant sources.
Expanding the Initiative Across the Region
The Tanyigbe SHS project is one of several under the Water For All Initiative. Drilling operations have begun at Taviefe Health Centre and Mawuko Girls School in Ho as well.
Completed projects include those at Ho Technical Institute, Ho Airfield M/A Basic School, and Atiyinu. These efforts aim to improve access to clean water in both educational and healthcare settings.
A representative from the Regional Coordinating Council stated these projects address significant gaps in water infrastructure throughout Volta Region.
Ensuring Lasting Impact
By focusing on schools and health centers, the government targets areas with urgent need for clean water. This approach also aims to reduce gender disparities in education since girls are disproportionately affected by lack of access during menstruation.
Grace Amekudzi, a local health worker, remarked that "water is life." She believes this initiative will greatly benefit schools and communities alike.
