The Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, announced plans to evacuate ECG containers. These containers are currently at the Tema Port. They will be moved to a secured warehouse with tight security.
During an interview on JoyNews’ News Night, Jinapor expressed safety concerns. He emphasized that strict measures must be in place during relocation. "Anything can happen," he said about the process.
This announcement follows a report revealing over 1,300 missing ECG containers. ECG reported having 2,491 uncleared containers. However, an audit found only 1,134 containers accounted for.
Jinapor vowed to launch a full-scale criminal investigation. This will involve national security, the police, and the Attorney General. "I'm writing to the police service and the presidency," he stated.
He noted that it is strange that so many containers are unaccounted for. Questions arise about how they went missing from the port. "Did people just lift them? Or pretend to clear them?" he asked.
The report also revealed that ECG had a fund for clearing containers but stopped due to lack of funds. Additionally, two firms were contracted for clearing shipments; one lacked a necessary license.
Jinapor assured the public that those responsible will face consequences after the investigation concludes.
