We'll not sacrifice public safety for money – FDA

The Upper East Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned sachet water producers. They must avoid unhygienic and poor sanitary conditions. Such practices threaten public safety.

Abel Ndego, the Acting Regional Head of the FDA, issued this warning. He explained that the FDA can take various actions. These include warning letters, facility closures, fines, and prosecution.

Ndego emphasized that public health is a priority for the FDA. "We will not let you profit at people's expense," he told producers in Bolgatanga. This statement was made during a sensitization program organized by the FDA.

The program aimed to share best practices with sachet water producers. It focused on guidelines and international standards for higher quality production.

During routine inspections, Ndego noted sanitation issues at production facilities. "Cleaning regimes are not as effective as they should be," he said. Sanitation is crucial to minimize contamination risks.

He stressed that proper sanitation protects product integrity and quality. Ultraviolet (UV) sterilization lights are essential in sachet water production. However, some facilities had non-functional UV lights.

The FDA has halted production at these facilities until repairs are made. "UV light kills harmful germs or bacteria in water," Ndego explained. Filtration only removes particulate matter; sterilization ensures safe consumption.

Ndego highlighted that water is life. Those producing it hold people's lives in their hands. If something goes wrong, serious consequences may follow.

He warned producers about regulatory actions for non-compliance. The FDA has fined six sachet water facilities and closed two since early 2025. More actions are expected moving forward.

It is vital for the FDA to ensure all products meet safety standards within the Region. Ndego stated that 2025 would be an action year for the FDA. The Authority will provide producers with regulatory requirements for safe water production.
