The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is unhappy with President John Mahama. He has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The NPP believes this suspension attacks Ghana’s democracy and the judiciary. They see it as a personal affront to the Chief Justice.
During a Thank You Tour on April 23, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, spoke out. He said the party will not ignore the President's decision.
The NPP plans to hold nationwide protests against what they call an unconstitutional act.
“Our democracy is under attack,” Nana B stated. “This is not just about Chief Justice Torkornoo; it affects the entire judiciary.”
He promised a massive protest from the NPP. “We will agitate and not sit quietly,” he added.
President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo after forming a committee to investigate her. This was announced in a statement from the Presidency.
The move follows constitutional provisions and consultations with the Council of State. The President cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution for this action.
This article requires a committee to investigate allegations against superior court judges if there is sufficient evidence. The statement indicated that President Mahama found enough grounds for further inquiry.
