We are calling for the resignation of the Auditor-General – UTAG-UG

The University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) is demanding the resignation of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu. This follows a payroll audit report that accused his office of misconduct and ethical breaches.

The demand stems from a special payroll verification audit. This audit claimed the University of Ghana overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million from 2022 to 2024. However, UTAG-UG has rejected these findings. They describe the report as misleading, damaging, and unfair.

UTAG-UG General Secretary Jerry Joe expressed concerns about the audit service's intentions. He stated that they seem more focused on appearances than on ethical standards.

The association argues that the audit report was published without allowing the university to respond. They view this as a violation of basic auditing ethics.

Mr. Joe emphasized that the university was not given a chance to clarify discrepancies before publication. He called this omission unfair and unethical, highlighting it as a serious breach of auditing ethics.

UTAG-UG believes the Auditor-General's actions harm public institutions' credibility and damage university staff's reputation. They argue that responsible auditing should be transparent and consultative.

Mr. Joe stated that if ethical standards are disregarded, they will call for the Auditor-General’s resignation or petition the President for his removal.
