We are only asking for just 1 cedi so we can end dumsor – Mahama Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has made a statement. He said the government is asking for just 1 cedi. This request aims to end the erratic power supply known as dumsor.

Ghanaians will pay an extra 1 cedi when buying fuel. This change comes with the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill 2025. Ayariga emphasized, “Just 1 cedi, so we can end dumsor.”

The new bill increases the levy on petroleum products by GH¢1. Reports suggest this measure could generate GH¢5.7 billion in revenue. The funds will help reduce energy sector debts and address dumsor.

Ato Forson spoke in Parliament about the energy sector's financial needs. He stated that at least $3.7 billion is required to clear current debts. In addition, he mentioned that $1.2 billion will be needed for fuel procurement in 2025.

Forson warned that the power sector risks imminent collapse without resolving these debts. The government plans to increase pump prices for diesel and petrol. However, he noted that consumers won’t pay extra due to gains from a strong Ghana cedi.

Franklin Cudjoe criticized Parliament's approval of the ¢1 levy as "the fastest pickpocketing ever."
