The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has made an urgent appeal. He is addressing the ongoing power outages (dumsor) in his constituency. These outages have lasted for months without warning.
In a statement on April 17, 2025, Hon. Shaib described the power cuts as disruptive and unplanned. He expressed frustration after multiple discussions with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). There has been little action taken to resolve the issue.
He stated, “I wish to bring to the urgent attention of relevant authorities the persistent and unannounced power outages that have plagued our constituency.”
According to Hon. Shaib, these outages occur without notice from ECG or GRIDCo. This lack of communication has serious consequences for households and businesses. Healthcare facilities and schools are also affected.
He warned that this situation compromises essential services and endangers lives. The MP said, “These unplanned outages cause widespread disruption to households, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and businesses.”
Hon. Shaib acknowledged that the power crisis is a national problem but noted Weija-Gbawe's unique struggles. Some communities have faced continuous outages for over four days or longer.
Despite previous discussions with ECG officials, no progress has been made. “We have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention,” he said. However, residents still face unreliable electricity supply.
In closing, Hon. Shaib appealed firmly yet respectfully to ECG and GRIDCo. He urged them to take immediate action alongside the Ministry of Energy. “The people of Weija-Gbawe deserve better,” he declared.
