Acting Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has justified the government’s swift decision to launch an investigation into the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Ofosu stated that the government cannot rely solely on the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and AngloGold’s version of events. He emphasized the need to gain a clear understanding of what transpired to ensure peace and order.

“The government has a responsibility for the safety of the people, and that’s why we’ve ordered this immediate probe,” he said.

Nine people lost their lives after a group of illegal miners breached the mine’s security fence.

Despite reports that the miners were armed and fired on soldiers, one victim, Baba Abdullai, denies these claims, stating they had no weapons and peacefully surrendered.

In light of this, Ofosu stressed that the law must be upheld and justice ensured, as indiscriminate killings are not the answer.
