Professor P.L.O. Lumumba, a Pan-Africanist and anti-corruption advocate, spoke at the University of Education, Winneba. He urged African leaders and citizens to change their mindset. He emphasized the need to stop being "imprisoned in history and lamentation."
During his lecture on April 11, Prof Lumumba highlighted the importance of moving forward. He called for building on the foundations laid by Africa’s great leaders, especially Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president.
“We cannot remain imprisoned in history and lamentation,” he stated. He encouraged Africa to look beyond past grievances. Instead, he urged a focus on how past leaders can shape a brighter future.
Prof Lumumba said, “Nkrumah is dead but Nkrumah never dies.” He explained that Nkrumah's ideas remain relevant today.
Using Nkrumah’s legacy as an example, he challenged Africans to engage with the future. This engagement should honor their past without being limited by it.
He asked the audience if anyone would contradict him about Nkrumah's influence in 1955. He also questioned who would argue that Nkrumah did not prioritize education when establishing the University of Ghana.
Prof Lumumba praised Nkrumah's vision for higher education institutions. These institutions aimed to empower Africans through knowledge and intellectual independence.
