We did this to ourselves—Bawumia blames NPP’s 2024 election loss on low turnout

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He recently stated that the party's defeat in the 2024 elections was self-inflicted.

During the NPP’s “Thank You” tour at their headquarters in Accra, he spoke candidly. He said, “Despite our hard work, we suffered a heavy defeat.” He noted that many supporters did not vote.

Bawumia emphasized that this lack of participation made a significant difference. He revealed that 2.1 million NPP supporters stayed home during the election. He believes this is why they lost.

He stated, “The key to victory is within the NPP.” If supporters decide to vote, he thinks they will win.

His comments followed the Electoral Commission's announcement of the election results. John Dramani Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won with 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55%. In contrast, Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes, which is 41.61%.

Bawumia’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions among party members. Some acknowledge low morale and internal apathy during the campaign. Others believe more is needed than just increased turnout to win future elections.
