Veteran Ghanaian politician Freddie Blay has reflected on the party's 2024 electoral defeat. He believes the loss was due to a disconnect between leadership and supporters.
Blay told Serwaa Amihere on GHOne that the party's leadership failed to engage its base. He said, “The government did not carry along the bulk of our supporters.” This lack of communication affected support for tough economic measures.
He highlighted economic policies like the controversial E-levy. These decisions were necessary but poorly explained to voters. “Some measures were hard and costly,” he noted.
Blay compared these measures to taking bitter medicine without proper explanation. He said, “It is difficult for many of us to swallow bitter pills.” Many people resist difficult medication, even when prescribed by doctors.
He believes better engagement could have changed the election outcome. If they had taken time to educate supporters, especially two million abstainers, things might be different. “We wouldn’t be singing the same song,” he concluded.
