Freddie Blay, former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is discussing political party financing. He emphasizes the need for a transparent and sustainable funding model. This model would support Ghana’s democratic development.
Blay spoke on GHOne TV with Serwaa Amihere, as reported by MyNewsGH. He recalled past attempts to secure state support for political parties. These efforts were rejected at that time.
“When I was a Member of Parliament, we proposed party funding,” he said. “Brother Sam, then Attorney General, said no.”
He noted that even when the political landscape changed, momentum for funding remained low. “Some people were not enthusiastic about it,” he added.
Blay believes it is time to adopt a more accountable approach to party finances. This change could prevent inappropriate actions in the future.
“We must ensure our parties don’t engage in indefensible activities,” he stated. “A transparent way of funding will help our democracy.”
