The New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not know where its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is. He is commonly known as Chairman Wontumi.
This uncertainty follows the party's failed attempt to meet him at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra on May 30. Wontumi was reportedly transferred to the NIB after being detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This detention is part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confirmed they could not see Wontumi at the NIB. They were granted entry but left without meeting him.
On Channel One Newsroom, Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed expressed concern about this situation. He called it "very surprising."
Mohammed compared this incident to a past case involving Koku Anyidohu from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Anyidohu was detained by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on treason charges.
He noted that former President John Dramani Mahama and NDC leaders were allowed to visit Anyidohu during his detention. "No, we have not been able to find Chairman Wontumi," Mohammed said.
He added, "I don’t know what has changed now." He criticized the current government's handling of high-profile cases, stating, "This government is interested in persecution."
He questioned what outcome they want for the country.
