Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, made a surprising claim. He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lacks GHS 50 million in properties. This amount is needed to meet Chairman Wontumi's bail conditions.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27. He spent the night at EOCO because he could not meet his bail conditions.
On May 28, 2025, Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties. However, his legal team did not fully satisfy the requirements for his release. He is under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
Afenyo-Markin spoke before an NPP march to EOCO. He urged respect for the law and cooperation with investigative agencies. He warned that current treatment could have consequences in 2029.
He questioned where Wontumi would find GHS 50 million in properties. Afenyo-Markin stated that if EOCO does not act properly, NPP members will protest by leaving Parliament to support Wontumi. They plan to sleep there with him and will not ask for any property.
He expressed hope that his colleagues would unite in support of Wontumi's case against EOCO. Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has secured one surety but needs one more to fulfill his bail conditions.
