We have nothing to hide—Akonta Mining denies forest mining allegations

Akonta Mining Limited has denied accusations of illegal mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. These claims were made by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. He has called for the revocation of Akonta Mining's license.

In a statement, Akonta Mining distanced itself from any activities in the forest reserve. The company stated that responsibility lies with the state.

“We are not responsible for activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve,” they said. “That responsibility lies solely with the Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.”

Akonta Mining criticized the Minister’s accusations as premature and unjustified. They expressed concern over state institutions shifting blame to a private company.

“The Minister's public accusations without investigation are unfair,” they added. “This is a clear breach of natural justice and politically motivated.”

The company emphasized its commitment to lawful operations. “We assure the Ghanaian public that we have nothing to hide,” they stated.

“We remain committed to transparency, legal compliance, and environmental responsibility.” They noted that all documents and permits are available for public scrutiny.

The controversy began after Minister Buah addressed the press on April 21, 2025. He accused Akonta Mining of enabling illegal mining in Aboi Forest Reserve.

According to him, Akonta allegedly sold concessions to unauthorized miners for GHC 300,000 each. These miners reportedly paid weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold to Akonta’s collaborators.

“There is no control over these illegal miners,” he said. “They continue to destroy with impunity under Akonta Mining's lease.”
