In Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a famous slogan: “We have the men.”
However, broadcaster Johnnie Hughes criticized this claim on 3FM. He used sarcasm and economic facts to show that Ghanaians face hardship and broken promises.
Hughes said, “You didn’t have to brag that you have the men.” This slogan once energized NPP rallies but now highlights their failures.
The NPP claimed its economic team was the best in Ghana’s history. They promised fiscal discipline, growth, and a stable cedi. Instead, inflation soared, taxes became unpopular, and the cedi fell to GH¢17 per dollar.
Hughes noted that within five months, the opposition brought the dollar down from 17 to 10. He questioned what the NPP's 'men' were doing during this time.
He referenced a Facebook post from an importer about lower import costs due to the cedi's recovery. Hughes argued this change happened under quieter leadership, not one focused on public relations.
To Hughes, the NPP’s slogan had become a symbol of misplaced pride. It no longer inspires confidence but serves as a painful reminder of their failures.
