Politics often involves strategies that can be clean or messy. In Ghana's upcoming 2024 elections, a surprising truth has emerged.
Maurice Ampaw, a legal practitioner and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made a bold admission. He confirmed that the NPP recognized John Dramani Mahama as a serious contender.
Contrary to public perception, they did not view Mahama as an outdated ex-president. Instead, they were genuinely afraid of him.
On his show on Wontumi FM, Ampaw stated, “We knew Mahama was our biggest threat.” His tone was calm and honest, showing no pride or regret.
He added, “Forget the public noise. Internally, we respected him. We feared him.” He acknowledged that if the NDC presented Mahama, it would be a tough election.
This admission contrasts sharply with the NPP's public stance at the time. During rallies and press conferences, NPP leaders claimed Mahama was out of touch and had lost his chances.
Ampaw explained this was all part of their strategy. “The plan was simple,” he said. “We had to destroy his image before the people.”
They aimed to create doubt in voters' minds about Mahama’s capabilities. This wasn’t because they believed he had nothing to offer; rather, they knew he had too much to offer.
