Effia-Kwesimintsim MCE Promises New Market to Boost Trade and Jobs
The Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has announced plans for a new market. Abdul Majeed Dokurigu aims to reconstruct the Jubilee Ground in Sekondi Takoradi. This area is currently in poor condition and needs urgent attention.
Dokurigu shared his vision during an interview with YEN.com.gh. He took over as MCE from Kojo Acquah and is focused on improving the area. The Jubilee Grounds were temporarily used as a market during COVID-19 in 2019.
This was done to allow for the ongoing reconstruction of the main Takoradi market, expected to finish by late 2025. Once this project is complete, focus will shift back to restoring the Jubilee Grounds.
“The Jubilee Grounds is not meant to be a market,” he stated. “It was repurposed due to the Takoradi Market's reconstruction.” He emphasized that fixing the main issue is crucial.
Dokurigu has been working with STMA leadership and the Western Regional Minister on these projects. He noted that the current state of Jubilee Grounds requires a complete rebuild, not just renovations.
In addition, he mentioned plans for a new market at Number 9 in Effiakuma suburb. Discussions about this project are still in early stages.
“I met with my sector minister last week about this,” he said. A sod-cutting ceremony will be held soon for the new Effia Market.
The new market will also include an intercity lorry station for commercial drivers and transport unions. This development aims to reduce congestion in Sekondi Takoradi’s central business area.
Dokurigu stressed that building the Effia Market is a top priority for him. He remains committed to seeing it completed quickly.
The Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly became official on March 15, 2018. It includes 13 electoral areas across two constituencies: Effia and Kwesimintsim, with 23 members total.
In related news, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, known as King Zuba, was confirmed as KMA chief executive recently after receiving support from assembly members following his presidential nomination by John Mahama.
