We’ll purge militia elements – Mahama unveils reforms in security services

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a board of inquiry. This board will investigate alleged irregularities in recent Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercises. This move shows a commitment to improving the country’s security sector.

During a 120-day update at Jubilee House, Mahama addressed concerns about political influence in security agencies. He promised a strong approach to restore professionalism and trust.

“We will start investigations to remove militia and vigilante elements from our security services,” he said. The board will examine recruitment practices for discrepancies and suggest corrective actions.

The board will focus on the integrity of recruitment protocols. There are concerns that some enlistments may have been influenced by political connections instead of merit.

Mahama also announced a new security recruitment database. This database aims to eliminate political bias in hiring processes.

“The new system will flag and disqualify applicants linked to political vigilante groups,” he explained. The initiative seeks to decentralize and depoliticize security recruitment.

These reforms extend beyond the Ghana Armed Forces. The police service, Ghana National Fire Service, and prison service are also undergoing changes. These changes aim for fairness, transparency, and accountability across all services.

“This is not just for the Armed Forces; similar reforms apply to police, fire, and prison services,” he stated.
