We’ll support it – Minister pledges full backing for Okomfo Anokye festival

The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, supports the Okomfo Anokye Festival. She calls it a powerful celebration of Ghana’s heritage. The festival can boost social cohesion, tourism, and the local economy.

At the festival's launch in Awukugua, she highlighted culture's role in national development. “The Regional Coordinating Council will support projects that uphold our cultural legacy,” she said.

She added that culture promotes social cohesion and economic growth. Festivals like this can attract tourists and strengthen local economies. They also help deepen understanding of Ghanaian identity.

The atmosphere in Awukugua was regal during the event. Chiefs, queen mothers, cultural troupes, and residents attended in vibrant kente and traditional attire. This maiden edition of the festival honors Okomfo Anokye’s life and legacy.

Okomfo Kwame Anokye Frimpong Kotobre is better known as Okomfo Anokye. He was a 17th-century priest and co-founder of the Asante Kingdom. He is believed to have been born in Awukugua.

Anokye is famous for calling down the Golden Stool from the heavens. This stool symbolizes the soul of the Asante people. Alongside King Osei Tutu I, he helped unify the Asante people and establish their empire's foundations.

His influence extended beyond religion into politics, law, and social order.
