President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal discipline. Ghana aims to exit the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme by 2026.
He spoke at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit on May 26. The theme was “Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy.” President Mahama emphasized the importance of careful government spending and borrowing.
He stated, “Completing the IMF programme with discipline is essential.” He added that the government will continue disciplined expenditure and borrowing practices. They aim to meet all targets under the extended credit facility programme with the IMF.
The president noted that they plan to complete the fourth review of the IMF programme by June 2025. This review is a key milestone toward completing the entire programme.
“Afterwards, we will participate in Article IV consultations,” he said. They will also adopt the Policy Support Instrument framework. This will signal Ghana’s return to responsible, non-borrowing engagement with the Fund.
President Mahama's comments come as Ghana nears completion of its IMF-supported programme. Stakeholders are closely monitoring how the government manages economic recovery and reforms.
