President John Mahama has called for dialogue among Sahel leaders. This follows their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He described the decision to withdraw as "regrettable." He emphasized the need for ongoing engagement. "Continuous engagement must be our lodestar," he stated. He urged responses based on understanding and dialogue.
Mahama spoke during ECOWAS's 50th anniversary launch in Accra on April 22. He reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to cooperation with Sahelian states. "Ghana has appointed a special envoy for high-level conversations," he said.
He also mentioned leading missions to build trust and communication. The Sahel region includes Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad. Recently, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have left ECOWAS.
