We must immediately declare a state of emergency - Awula Serwah

Awula Serwah, Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, has made a strong appeal. She calls for urgent action against what she terms "environmental terrorism." She warns that the nation faces an existential threat. A state of emergency should be declared immediately.

On April 15, the military demolished a hidden settlement in the Western Region. This community, Abrewa Ne Nkran, had over 10,000 residents. It lacks basic amenities and is not officially recognized. The settlement was established by Ghanaians and foreigners involved in illegal gold mining.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show on April 16, Madam Serwah described the environmental crisis as severe. She labeled the culprits “environmental terrorists.” Their actions require immediate intervention from all security branches.

“It’s essential to put systems in place to prevent their return,” she stated. She emphasized that we face an existential threat from these activities. “A state of emergency must be declared,” she insisted.

Madam Serwah acknowledged some positive developments but warned against delays. “The more we wait, the worse it gets,” she cautioned. Illegal conduct will increase if no action is taken.

She urged security services to ensure illegal miners do not return to forest reserves. “We must declare a state of emergency now,” she said. With clear mandates for armed forces, they can remove miners and prevent their return.

Madam Serwah highlighted the need for decisive leadership and military intervention. Systemic reform is necessary to eradicate environmental destruction at its roots.

“We face a very serious situation,” she concluded. Urgent and coordinated action across all government levels is crucial. “We can’t afford to delay; we must take decisive action now.”
