We must re-enter 21st century with laws known to Ghana – Prof Lumumba

Anti-corruption advocate and Pan-Africanist, Professor P.L.O. Lumumba, spoke at the University of Education, Winneba. He called for a rethinking of Ghana's legal and judicial systems. He urged the country and continent to move beyond colonial legacies.

Prof. Lumumba emphasized the need for laws rooted in African identity. He criticized African legal systems for relying on colonial practices and foreign precedents.

“Must we always compare ourselves with others?” he asked. “We must change to enter the 21st century with confidence,” he added.

He also critiqued the outdated dress code of legal practitioners. “Judges still dress like Father Christmas,” he remarked humorously.

Prof. Lumumba pointed out Ghana’s reliance on English legal precedents in local matters. “In Cape Coast, we still cite decisions made by English judges,” he noted.

He stressed that it is time for Ghana to rethink its laws. This change is essential for sovereignty, cultural pride, and practical relevance in Africa today.
