Dr. Tony Aidoo, a key member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shared his views on President John Dramani Mahama's administration. He offered a mixed assessment of the government's performance.
Dr. Aidoo acknowledged some positive developments. However, he stressed that illegal mining remains a serious issue. This activity is damaging Ghana’s forests and rivers.
He criticized the government for not taking stronger action against illegal mining. “Why can’t the president declare a state of emergency?” he asked. He also questioned why laws allowing mining in forests have not been repealed.
Reflecting on Ghana’s political history, Dr. Aidoo praised former leaders like Jerry John Rawlings and John Atta Mills for their contributions. Yet, he reserved his highest praise for Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He described Nkrumah's government as the best in Ghana's history. Despite acknowledging Nkrumah’s flaws, Dr. Aidoo highlighted significant successes during his tenure.
These successes included advancements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. According to him, Nkrumah laid the groundwork for many modern benefits that Ghana enjoys today.
In conclusion, Dr. Aidoo provided a balanced view of Ghana's political evolution. He recognized both achievements and shortcomings of past and present governments. He called for more decisive leadership to tackle ongoing challenges facing the nation.
