Dr. Victor Bampoe, CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), announced plans to expand Ghana’s free dialysis program. This aims to make treatment more accessible for renal patients.
He spoke about the current state of dialysis support in Ghana. Dr. Bampoe acknowledged the previous government's role in starting the program. He noted that there are 20 centers offering free dialysis services.
However, he emphasized the need for sustainable funding to expand these services. “What is needed is to expand it to make it more sustained,” he said.
Dr. Bampoe also highlighted the importance of integrating dialysis into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This would ensure that dialysis becomes a permanent part of Ghana’s healthcare system.
He stated, “Instead of depending on some funds, it will become like any other disease under the NHIS.”
If implemented, this move could greatly benefit many Ghanaians with kidney-related diseases. Dialysis treatment is one of the most expensive and essential procedures for patients with renal failure.
