Hamza Suhuyini Sayibu, a member of the NDC Communications team, has denied media claims. These claims suggest President John Dramani Mahama promised to end illegal mining (galamsey) in three months.
“We never promised to end galamsey in weeks or three months,” he said. He made this statement during an interview on TV3’s New Day on Wednesday.
Sayibu emphasized that President Mahama supports a sustainable approach to illegal mining. He stated that Mahama has always been clear about his stance against galamsey.
“Just like we tackled dumsor under him, we need a holistic approach,” he added. This is essential for resolving the galamsey issue as a country.
He also addressed allegations of a 120-day pledge to end galamsey. Sayibu dismissed these claims as false and misleading.
“It is not for nothing that our first 120-day pledge does not mention ending illegal mining,” he explained. There are no promises stating, “I will end illegal mining in 120 days.”
Sayibu argued that the NDC understands the complexities of fighting galamsey. They chose not to make unrealistic promises because they recognize the challenges involved.
“We could have made such promises, but we knew it would be difficult,” he said. Sustainable measures are necessary for success in this fight, which is why they avoided such commitments.
