Parliament has just abolished the E-Levy, betting tax, and other levies. Now, the Interior and Sanitation Ministers want to introduce new taxes for their ministries.
Before discussions start, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has opposed these proposals. They warn that new taxes could burden businesses and ordinary Ghanaians.
Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Local Government, suggests a Sanitation Fund. He believes this fund will help address Ghana’s waste management crisis. A dedicated tax would provide resources to improve sanitation nationwide.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak proposes a fuel levy for the Ghana National Fire Service. This comes after criticism of the government's response to a recent fire disaster in Kumasi.
Muntaka stated that everyone should contribute by adding 10 pesewas per litre of fuel for firefighting efforts. He emphasized the urgent need for better firefighting equipment. The newest fire tenders were bought over ten years ago in 2014.
Abass Imoro, an industrial relations officer at GPRTU, opposes the proposed fuel tax. He argues it will increase costs for transport operators and the public.
Imoro said they expect fuel prices to decrease soon. Adding 10 pesewas or more per litre is unwelcome news for drivers. He urges reconsideration of this proposal.
