We’re committed to paying better cocoa prices despite challenges – COCOBOD CEO

Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey is the Chief Executive of COCOBOD. He recently spoke at a farmers’ rally in Attronso, Sefwi Bekwai District. Despite challenges in the cocoa sector, he affirmed COCOBOD's commitment to improving farmers' lives.

During his visit, Dr. Abbey announced plans to review cocoa prices for 2025/2026. This aims to show the government's dedication to supporting cocoa farmers and attracting youth. He emphasized that COCOBOD wants to offer better prices despite financial constraints.

Dr. Abbey expressed concern about the aging population of cocoa farmers. He sees this as a threat to the sector's sustainability. Attracting young people through modernization and innovation is crucial.

He mentioned working with the Ministry of Agriculture on modernizing cocoa farming. Advanced tools and equipment will make farming more appealing to youth. To address climate change, he plans to prioritize irrigation systems on farms.

Farmers are encouraged to join cooperatives for effective irrigation projects. Individual implementation is costly and hindered by illegal mining activities. Cooperative farming is essential for progress in this area.

Dr. Abbey also discussed amending laws protecting cocoa trees from environmental threats. Involving stakeholders will help create stronger legal protections for crops. He believes these laws are vital against destruction caused by illegal operators.

He assured farmers of timely supplies of fertilizers and agrochemicals. Dr. Abbey urged support for preventing diversion of these essential inputs. Misconduct will be addressed, and those responsible will face consequences.

Finally, he called on all stakeholders in the cocoa value chain to unite with COCOBOD’s efforts for revitalization and sustainability in the sector. Dr. Abbey was accompanied by COCOBOD management during his tour.
