We’re feeding the corruption we complain about – Senanu

Edem Senanu, Co-Chair of the Citizen’s Movement Against Corruption, spoke on TV3’s Keypoints. He urged Ghanaians to reconsider their expectations of public officials.

Senanu highlighted that these cultural pressures contribute to corruption. He said, “The demands we are placing on them lead to complaints.”

He emphasized that public officials should not be expected to pay for funerals, weddings, or school fees. “Where do you get all that money from?” he asked.

Senanu warned against normalizing such expectations from politicians. This pressure can lead to unethical behavior. “Let’s rethink all of this. Seriously. Let’s stop demanding,” he stated.

He also discussed the rising costs of political campaigns in Ghana. He noted that a presidential campaign costs about $150 million. That amounts to $3.1 million each month.

Members of Parliament are also spending hundreds of thousands of cedis on campaigns. Senanu questioned why some feel compelled to misuse state resources in this context.
