We’re sending tractors and seeds, even if farmers can’t pay – Opoku

Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku has shared key updates on the Feed Ghana programme. This initiative aims to revive Ghana’s agriculture sector. It focuses on improving irrigation and supporting farmers.

In an interview with Citi FM, Mr. Opoku explained the government's plans. They are setting up regional agricultural service centres across the country. These centres will be equipped with modern tools and resources for farmers.

The centres will provide tractors, combined harvesters, improved seeds, fertilisers, and water pumping machines. Extension officers will also be available to assist farmers. Importantly, even if farmers lack funds, they can access these services and repay after harvest.

Mr. Opoku emphasized that the government wants to ensure no farmer is left behind due to financial constraints or lack of tools.

He also discussed Ghana’s irrigation systems, which he described as a major concern. The government has taken inventory of all irrigation infrastructure in the country. Currently, much of this infrastructure is either non-functional or underutilized.

Some systems are operating at only 10 percent of their capacity. This underutilization has hindered sustainable food production, especially during dry seasons.

Mr. Opoku highlighted the broader vision of the Feed Ghana initiative. He stressed that strong leadership is essential for successful agricultural reforms. “It takes leadership to rally people behind strategies,” he said. Without commitment from leaders, achieving results becomes difficult.
