The Government of Ghana and Goldfields Ghana Limited have reached a deal. This agreement is for a transitional plan at the Damang Mine. It allows for a 12-month mining lease to keep operations running while long-term plans are developed.
On April 23, 2025, the Presidency announced that Abosso Goldfields Limited will receive the lease. This subsidiary of Goldfields needs parliamentary approval in May.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President's spokesperson, emphasized that this transition is important. He stated it is not just a formality but a strategic move forward.
During this transition, Goldfields will resume open-pit mining. They will also protect jobs and conduct feasibility studies on Damang’s reserves and mine life.
Processing of existing stockpiles will continue under joint management. This team includes representatives from both the government and Goldfields.
Kwakye Ofosu noted that both parties are committed to a successful transition. They aim to transfer a viable mine to Ghanaian ownership eventually.
Looking ahead, discussions about the Tarkwa mine are already in progress. Its lease is set for renewal in 2027.
The government and Goldfields have promised to work together on investments. “We’re shaping the future of mining in Ghana,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
