We want due process, not seeking relevance - NPP defends petitions against Sammy Gyamfi

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has dismissed claims about their recent petition. This petition targets Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive of Goldbod. Some suggest it is a political stunt to stay relevant in opposition.

Mr. Mohammed stated that the NPP's actions focus on due process and protecting Ghana’s democracy. He spoke on JoyNews’ The Pulse on May 15.

He rejected claims that the petition is a distraction after their defeat in the 2024 elections. “We are not seeking relevance,” he said. “We want to maintain Ghana’s democratic credentials.”

He emphasized that the petition aims to protect public institutions and ensure accountability. “We want to sanctify processes and uphold Ghana's democratic standards,” he added.

His comments support a petition by the Minority in Parliament. They have asked CHRAJ, OSP, and IGP to investigate allegations against Sammy Gyamfi. These allegations involve him gifting cash to Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, known as Nana Agradaa.

Mr. Mohammed insisted this issue transcends partisan politics. It reflects the NPP’s commitment to democratic governance.

“There’s more to governance than politics,” he said. He noted that a political party's relevance comes from its legacy.

The NPP's legacy since 1992 remains unmatched in democratic contributions and governance policies, he claimed. He also highlighted their commitment to ethical conduct in public service, referencing guidelines from the President for officeholders.
