We will begin geotagging and geofencing of excavators from ports – Armah Buah

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, announced a new initiative. The government will geotag and geofence excavators imported into Ghana.

During a press briefing on April 3, the minister explained the purpose of this initiative. It aims to monitor and track excavators from their arrival at ports.

Mr. Buah emphasized the need for tighter control over mining equipment. He stated that geotagging and geofencing should start as soon as excavators arrive.

This announcement comes amid rising concerns about illegal mining in Ghana. Illegal mining, known as galamsey, has significant environmental and social impacts.

“It doesn’t make any sense that we import so many excavators,” Mr. Buah said. He noted that these machines are worth 6.2 billion cedis.

“These machines destroy forests, pollute water bodies, and harm people,” he added. “This must stop.”

He acknowledged ongoing discussions about the plan's specifics. However, he stressed that the government is considering restricting excavator imports.

“We believe it’s time to restrict the import of excavators,” he said.

The geotagging and geofencing initiative is part of broader efforts against illegal mining. By tracking excavators and creating virtual boundaries, the government hopes to prevent misuse.

Mr. Buah concluded by reaffirming the government's commitment to protect natural resources. They aim to combat illegal mining effectively.
