The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for the immediate revocation of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo's suspension. They believe the suspension is unfair and unjustified.
At their mid-year conference in Accra on April 26, 2025, 43 GBA members passed a resolution. They stated that the petitions against the Chief Justice lacked sufficient evidence for her suspension.
After reviewing five petitions and her responses, the Bar expressed concern. They believe the suspension undermines judicial independence.
On April 22, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama suspended Justice Sackey Torkornoo. He cited a prima facie case and invoked Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution.
This decision followed consultations with the Council of State. A committee was formed to investigate the allegations against her.
GBA President Efua Ghartey emphasized transparency in this process. She noted that the Bar would actively monitor to ensure justice is served.
She also highlighted a need for clearer guidelines on removing judges and other Article 71 office holders.
The petitions against the Chief Justice include allegations of misconduct and administrative failures. This situation has sparked widespread debate within legal circles.
The GBA remains committed to ensuring fairness and justice for all involved in this matter.
